Friday Night Doodles

Feathers appear when Angels are near!

Have been wanting to draw a feather for a very long time, but was hesitant that I could not do it…found this feather on my walk earlier this week, washed it and as it was drying I got it to pull apart…have been staring at it for days…
Well tonight after work I visited a very dear friend’s Mother who is in the hospital…she needs your prayers…I know and pray that God and his Angels are near!
Used my Micron black pens 02, 03 and lightly shadowed with my Pentel Graphgear pencil 0.3 HB.

Tissue Paper Collage Tutorial

Tissue Paper Collage

photo (5)

Back in February of Week 6, I posted my tip in page on The Documented Life Project. It was a tissue paper collage inspired by Päivi Eerola. I found her tutorial about creating tissue paper art on her blog This is what I created from her teachings…There were a group of  ladies, back in February, that wanted to know how I created this page…I’m one of the biggest procrastinators, I could be the Grand Puba of them all, but I would never get around posting the first meetings…so finally sitting down and putting my first little tutorial of how I created this page!

Harper 016

I sat down and painted my background with a few colors from my watercolor palette on a piece of watercolor paper…caution…tea cup and brush rinse water glass close together can be a hazard….brushes rinsed in tea cup can happen without notice…use non-toxic paints if you plan on having tea or coffee as you work!

As your painted paper dries, find some light color tissue papers I used, pinks, yellows and white tissue paper. It’s fun to experiment on all color papers, but I used light color ones for this project!  Alcohol based markers with the tissue paper give you the best of color. They don’t blend together and make muddy colors…they just make beautiful colorful papers. I used Prismacolor Markers, but any type of alcohol base markers will work fine! I scattered different colors all over the paper…if you don’t use it all you will have extra for other projects or to send in Happy Mail exchanges!

Have a few different sizes of sharp scissors on hand for cutting out the very thin paper…come up with an idea that you might want to work into your artwork…I had flowers in mind so I cut out several different shapes for whimsical flowers and also cut out some leaf shapes to accent the stems.

Next I used Mod Podge but any medium that will adhere your tissue cutouts onto your background paper will work, glue stick, matte medium, gesso, etc…the mod podge was all I had in the house at the time. I scattered them as if they were growing in a garden. Let dry real well before going to the next step. Hair dryers or art dryers can be used to speed up the process.

I used a black Sharpie Pen to add my stems of the flowers onto the paper…after that I randomly attached the leaves the same way I did the flowers in the previous step. Again wait till your picture is fully dry before advancing to the next step.

This is where the Magic begins….your creativity can be set loose on your picture….I used the Sharpie Marker, White gelliroll pen, Derwent Inktense Watercolor pencils, watercolor base crayon, and distressing ink pads. I had fun doodling and adding touches to enhance the flowers with the black Sharpie pen, making them bloom and come to life! I used the Inktese pencils to add color to the doodled edges of the flowers, the gelliroll pen to accent the flowers and leaves to make them pop! The watercolor crayon and ink pads were used on the background paper to give a vignette grungy look to the edges.

Standing Strong

Tomorrow marks one more important day in my life…I will be meeting with my Doctor at NYU Clinical Cancer Center in New York City. Saturday I had my routine PET/CT scans…they are set for every 3 months.

I’ve found happiness and comfort this past year through art therapy as I learn to stand strong, be brave and have faith that all will be ok!

Choosing the tree to be my theme of strength of a positive life has been a great comfort to draw, paint and share with others that also need encouragement to get through their storm also!

I’ve just approached my 2nd year of surviving Metatastic Malignant Melanoma…so tomorrow I have faith and hope that this will be my 2nd good scan report of N.E.D. (No evidence of disease).

Sharing my year long photos of my Standing Strong Trees for a forest of strength to tell this cancer…”I will live and not die. I am blessed and I cannot be cursed. I’m a victor and not a victim.”

Jersey City & Hoboken Photo Walk

While most people headed south this weekend to get in their last beach days, we (as in Poppa and I) decided to go against the Holiday traffic and head North to shoot some street photography in Jersey City and Hoboken!

Where I stand…

Hmmm…..this pic would make a great MPG (mystery picture game) can you guess what this picture is?

IMG_8422-2 copy

Beautiful relief and iron art work dating back to the late 1800’s on this building….wonder if my Mom remembers this one…

a closer look….I see doodles of inspiration in the iron work!

I’m always amazed at the street art that can be found in our cities….the colors are beautiful and it seems there was a theme of women in this general area where I found this.

Love the movement of color against the black wall!

Color inspiration…I love how her hair looks to be in a locket of love!

These colors and play of letters used on this news stand found on Newark Ave make for fun piece of art work!

A close up of the face on the news stand….I love how the birds drift off of her!

This next group of street art pictures are painted on 2 sections of a long corner street wall. I find just getting out with no laid out plans of what to photograph brings me on new journey’s and this quote certainly gives me hope for Dreams of New Journeys! Just love that I found more art work with women’s faces….something I would love to be able to master some day!

The last part of the journey for the day brought us into Hoboken….as you can tell the heavens opened up and gave me an opportunity for some rain shots….love under an umbrella…rain drops on the window with a blurred vision of a park tree in the distance…and droplets after the storm!

IMG_8454 copy

Love under an umbrella….the only pic I posted in black & white…the rain came fast and furious making it impossible to see Manhattan across the river.
